Royce DeZorzi & The New Freedom Movement released their self-titled, debut LP on DeZorzi’s label, Frances Records. The three-song LP features a pair of warped, guitar-driven instrumental versions of pop songs from the early-2000s and an original funk tune written by DeZorzi.
Based in Denver, DeZorzi brought together Van Wey, drummer Dominic Fante and bassist Josiah Contreras for a recording session on June 26 that resulted in the three-song LP. The band recorded live to four-track tape at Third & James studio in Denver with its engineer Matt Legge who has worked with Ringo Starr, Taylor Swift, Peter Frampton and others. The record was produced by DeZorzi and mastered by Doug Krebs in Fort Collins, Colorado.

“I got the band together for the first time on Tuesday and we recorded the tunes on Friday,” DeZori said. “The tunes were new to everybody. We went to Third & James to cut so we could cut to tape. They didn’t have a tape machine but I had one, they hooked it up and we recorded the whole album over an old reel of Bruce Springsteen tunes. We did it all in a couple of hours, all the tunes were first takes.”
The LP begins with a cover of the title track off Gwen Stefani’s 2006 solo album, The Sweet Escape. While the No Doubt vocalist’s version was only four minutes long, Royce DeZorzi & The New Freedom Movement stretched the song out beyond the nine-minute mark.
