In response to the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak, CDC guidelines recommend “wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.” Also in response to the pandemic, several bands, musicians and music industry organizations began manufacturing and selling face masks.
In many cases, coinciding charity donations are being made with the purchase of the music-related face masks. In other instances, bands are using the sales of masks to help offset lost revenues from being forced off the road. One of the earliest adopters was the New Jersey-based band Thursday, who started sending their merchandise to local groups NJ Maskmakers and FaceMaskWarriors to repurpose it into cloth masks. The band also started selling masks, donating two masks to frontline healthcare workers for each mask they sold.
My Chemical Romance, Korn and Megadeth were also among the first bands to offer officially branded face masks. For more, below is a collection of other bands and organizations selling music-related face masks.
