Robby Krieger Hints At The Doors 50th Anniversary Celebration

While The Doors formed in 1965, band members Robby Krieger and John Densmore see 1967 as the true start of the group since they released their first two albums that year. As such, the pair are starting to formulate plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Doors in 2017 according to Billboard.

Krieger and Densmore see 2017 as their chance to honor keyboardist Ray Manzarek who passed away in 2013. “There’ll be something cool happening,” Krieger revealed to Billboard. “I can’t say exactly what yet, but we never did get our tribute to Ray thing going, so it’ll be part of that, for sure, and probably for Jim [Morrison], too.” Robby and John were in a long legal battle about the guitarist and Manzarek’s use of The Doors name, but put the issues to bed in the wake of Ray’s death.

“Forty [years] was pretty weird. Forty-eight’s pretty weird, too, so I don’t think about it too much,” Krieger added. “For some reason people still love the Doors’ music and I can tell you that it’s still fun to play. I think that’s a good indicator right there; If people still like to play it then people still like to listen to it. I’ve played on a lot of records that I wouldn’t even care about hearing again or playing live, but for some reason the Doors songs are still fun to play.”

In exciting news for Doors fans, Billboard mentions the band’s team has “recently acquired a new batch of tapes from a collector that are currently being investigated to see what might be culled” for possible release. We’d imagine The Doors’ 50th anniversary would be a good time to issue such previously unreleased recordings. Stay tuned.
