Music industry veteran and filmmaker Alison Tavel recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for her forthcoming documentary Resynator. The movie focuses on Alison’s journey after finding a Resynator synthesizer, the patented prototype invention that her dad built in the ’70s, in her grandmother’s attic five years ago. Tavel’s father passed away in a car accident when Alison was just 10-weeks-old in 1988 and Alison aimed to connect with her dad through finding out the story behind the instrument.
Alison’s adventure took her to faraway locales such as Colombia and the U.K. and she spoke with musicians such as Mike Gordon, Peter Gabriel, Goyte and more about the Resynator. Tavel also enlisted her boss and friend, Grace Potter, for whom she’s been working with since 2012 in various roles to help her understand the synth. Now, she’s resurrecting the Resynator by joining forces with Mu-Tron founder and her dad’s old partner, Mike Beigel. Alison Tavel is currently producing the documentary and hopes the Kickstarter campaign will help her raise the money needed to complete the film.

“I think this project makes perfect sense to be on Kickstarter – it’s taken a community to get the Resynator back in action and it will take a community to finish the film,” said Alison in a statement. “I hope this campaign not only helps me get the funding I need to finish the film, but also broadcasts this project to musicians who might want to use the Resynator for their upcoming projects. I want to see the Resynator back on the market one day, but first, people need to see the original being used.”
Those who back the campaign with a pledge of $750 can send in stems of their songs to be “resynated.” Other rewards include digital downloads of the film, a circuit board coffee mug, custom Resynator greetings, Grace Potter Resynator Soundscape vinyl, a Skype call with Grace and Alison, VIP tickets to a Grace Potter workshop, studio sessions with the Resynator and more.
While the good news is that over $40K has been raised thus far, $50K will allow Alison to finish production, $75K will enable the filmmaker to achieve many of her artistic visions, $100K will give her the chance to hire a composer to score the film and “the sky is limit” for more.
