Remembering The ‘One For Woody’ Tribute To Allen Woody

Fifteen years ago today Warren Haynes led an all-star tribute to Allen Woody, the Gov’t Mule bassist who had passed away less than a month earlier. One For Woody took place at a packed-to-the-gills Roseland Ballroom in New York City and featured performances from Phil Lesh & Friends, The Allman Brothers Band and The Black Crowes as well as a Warren Haynes & Friends set containing a slew of memorable sit-ins. The epic concert was historic on a number of levels as it marked the return of Haynes to The Allman Brothers Band and the first gig for one of Phil Lesh’s best post-Jerry projects.

The evening began with a set from the Phil Lesh Quintet, aka The “Q,” featuring Lesh backed by Haynes, Jimmy Herring, John Molo and Rob Barraco. Phil’s set marked the first by this particular group of musicians which would go on to be the longest running lineup of “friends” since Lesh first performed under the “Phil Lesh & Friends” moniker. Next up was a performance by The Allman Brothers featuring the return of Warren Haynes on guitar. Derek Trucks was unavailable, so the set would wind up being the only full Allmans set featuring Haynes and Herring in the guitar roles. Herring left the Allmans’ employ after this set to focus on Phil Lesh & Friends. Little Milton emerged during the ABB set for “Feel So Bad” and “Soulshine,” Chris Robinson and Rich Robinson led the group on “Dreams” and Phil Lesh came out for “Franklin’s Tower.” The Black Crowes set saw Haynes help out on “Chevrolet,” “Shake Your Money Maker” and “Oh Well.”

Haynes led a marathon 14-song set that ended the evening. Warren and Gov’t Mule drummer Matt Abts were joined by a variety of guests that included Johnny Neel, Danny Louis, Dave Schools, Berry Oakley Jr., Gordie Johnson, Phil Lesh, Kevn Kinney, Darius Rucker, Edwin McCain, Little Milton, Merl Saunders, Oteil Burbridge, Chris Robinson, Rob Barraco, John Molo, Jimmy Herring, Leslie West, Artimus Pyle, Eddie Harsch, Audley Freed, Robert Kearns, Lincoln Schleifer and Hook Herrera.

JamBase was on hand that night as we presented a review soon after the show written by J. Bau (who now works for Warren’s management) and Larry Brent. Both writers raved about the event, which we all figured would be officially released on video, yet still remains on the shelf. Luckily, One For Woody was webcast and a four-hour-and-20-minute (so heady!) video is available for viewing:
