To marks the anniversary of the passing of acclaimed rock saxophonist Bobby Keys, who died at the age of 70 on this date in 2014. Perhaps best-known for his contributions to many recordings by The Rolling Stones, notably his standout “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” solo, Keys’ resume was dotted with many other top musicians and Full Show Friday examines an all-star performance the late great saxman participated in back in 1969.
Among the fellow accomplished artists Keys worked with were the likes of Joe Cocker, B.B. King, Faces, Harry Nilsson, Warren Zevon, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Graham Nash, John Lennon and many others. Keys was also one of the many talented players tapped by Delaney Bramlett and Bonnie Bramlett for their Delaney & Bonnie And Friends project.
Other Friends involved with Delaney & Bonnie included Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dave Mason, Leon Russell, Jim Keltner, King Curtis and others. A Delaney & Bonnie And Friends lineup featuring the Bramletts, guitarists Eric Clapton and George Harrison, vocalist Rita Coolidge, bassist Carl Radle, drummer Jim Gordon, keyboardist Bobby Whitlock and Billy Preston, trumpeter Jim Price and percussionist Tex Johnson made an appearance on Danish television in 1969.
With Bobby Keys on sax to round out the lineup, watch the complete all-star ensemble in action in Copenhagen on December 10, 1969 below:
