Mavis Staples – If All I Was Was Black

The Scoop: The Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy partnership continues to pay dividends with today’s release of Mavis’s latest studio album, If All I Was Was Black. Not only did the Wilco frontman produce the LP, the third time he’s done so for a Mavis album, but he also performs on one of the tracks. Staples contributed lyrics to three of the new tunes. The album discusses many recent events and is said to be “about America today, where the present is filled with ghosts of the past.” Listen to the title track, “If All I Was Was Black”:

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – Soul Of A Woman

The Scoop: Beloved soul singer Sharon Jones sadly passed away last year at the age of 60 after a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. Her first posthumously issued LP, Soul Of A Woman, was recorded with her renowned backing band The Dap-Kings live to eight-track tape at Daptone’s House Of Soul studio in Brooklyn. The group’s bassist Bosco Mann produced the 11-track effort which includes songs written by Jones as well as The Dap-Kings guitarist Joey Crispiano, percussionist Fernando Velez and drummer Homer Steinweiss. “The last couple of years, Sharon was battling,” said Mann. “When she was strongest, that’s when we’d go into the studio — Sharon couldn’t phone it in, so we would only work when she was really feeling it.” Watch the poignant video for the track “Matter of Time”:
