Pro-Shot Full Show Video: Steve Kimock & Friends Featuring Bob Weir Celebrate Wavy Gravy At Sweetwater Music Hall
Guitarist Steve Kimock put together a band to perform at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California on Sunday night to celebrate counter-culture icon Wavy Gravy’s upcoming 82nd birthday. Kimock’s old RatDog mate Bob Weir sat-in on a set of Grateful Dead repertoire gems to kick off the festivities. Proceeds from the night went towards Wavy’s Camp Winnarainbow.
Steve’s band for the evening featured three more of his former RatDog collaborators: bassist Robin Sylvester, drummer Jay Lane and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. Video of Wavy’s “Basic Human Needs” was shown before Steve Kimock & Friends took the stage. Weir led the group through a “Shakedown Street” opener followed by a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Queen Jane Approximately.” Jay and Bobby then shared vocals on “Jack Straw” before Weir fronted “Row Jimmy.” Next up was a pairing of “Dark Star” and “Crazy Fingers.”
Sunday’s first set continued with Weir belting out late era Grateful Dead and RatDog staple “Easy Answers.” The former members of RatDog went on to conclude their performance with “Lady With Fan” > “Terrapin Station.” After the set, a birthday cake was brought out as fans honored the man born Hugh Romney. Wavy went on to perform “Basic Human Needs” joined by a few friends in between Steve Kimock & Friends’ sets.
Last night’s closing frame was filled with classics from Steve Kimock’s repertoire. Kimock, Lane, Chimenti and Sylvester began the second set with “Tangled Hangers” and “Tongue N’ Groove.” The quartet then delivered an inventive “Ice Cream” before Steve’s son Miles Kimock sat-in on “One For Brother Mike” and “5B4 Funk.” Miles was also aboard for a rendition of Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers To Cross” that served as the evening’s encore.
The venue shared a free live stream, which can be viewed below:
