Pro-Shot Full Show Video: The Disco Biscuits Kick Off 2018 Bisco Inferno Run

Pioneering jamtronica act The Disco Biscuits began this year’s Bisco Inferno run on Thursday night at the Ogden Theatre in Denver. The band fit a pair of covers among a selection of fan favorites and a surprising encore last night in Colorado.

Guitarist Jon “The Barber” Gutwillig, bassist Marc Brownstein, keyboardist Aron Magner and drummer Allen Aucoin opened with a lengthy, untz-heavy “7-11,” which they worked into a cover of LCD Soundsystem’s “Home.” The Disco Biscuits’ take on the song from LCD Soundsystem’s This Is Happening LP was their first of 2018. Barber channeled James Murphy in providing lead vocals on “Home.” The foursome then pulled off a slick segue into “Sweating Bullets.” All told, the three-song sequence that kicked off the show spanned over an hour and featured plenty of improvisation. The Disco Biscuits brought the frame to a close with a well-jammed version of the classic “Bernstein & Chasnoff.”

The quartet began Thursday’s second set with a “M.E.M.P.H.I.S.” in which Gutwillig shined, especially on the second half of the jam. From there, the Biscuits transitioned into an inverted “Humuhumunukunukuapua’a.” The year’s first “Humuhumunukunukuapua’a” featured plenty of beautiful major-key improvisation. A more evil-sounding jam gave way to Barber shredding his way through Donna Summer’s disco gem “I Feel Love.” The seamless, 80-minute closing stanza concluded with an inverted “And The Ladies Were The Rest Of The Night” and an intense “Pilin’ It Higher.”

For the encore, the band kept fans on their toes by serving up “Magellan Reprise.” Magner led a jam on The Manhattans’ “Shining Star” ahead of the first “Magellan Reprise” since February 6, 2016. The Disco Biscuits have three chances to play “Magellan” in Colorado this weekend with Friday and Saturday shows at the Ogden and a visit to Red Rocks on Sunday.
