Today marks the unfortunate anniversary of the death of beloved musician Prince, who sadly passed away on April 21, 2016. An iconic entertainer, Prince was unlike anyone that came before or after, carving a singular path through popular culture with music that transcended and exhilarated all who listened.
The Minneapolis native born Prince Rogers Nelson on June June 7, 1958, was just 57 years old when he died from an accidental drug overdose seven years ago. Leaving behind a lasting and evolving legacy, Prince’s musicianship set him apart as a multifaceted talent who could seemingly do it all when it came to recording and performing.
When Prince performed in concert it was a spectacle to behold. Showcasing his varied skillset, Prince was a consummate showman, frontman, lead guitarist, pianist and more. Despite his slight stature, Prince was a giant on the live stage, able to command and hold the attention of an arena-sized audience with a coolness shaded in purple.

On February 7, 2011, Prince performed at Madison Square Garden in New York City for a final time as part of his Welcome 2 Tour. Prior to the tour, Prince had not toured in North America for six years. Mixing up the setlist from night to night, the shows featured a mix of favorites and deep cuts from across Prince’s vast catalog, along with a few choice covers.
Several special guests were brought out during the MSG show. The Roots drummer Questlove was the first to come out and sat in on a performance of The Time’s song “Cool.” Later, Gnarls Barkley vocalist CeeLo Green emerged to sing the group’s ubiquitous hit, “Crazy.” Prince followed the cover with his own “Let’s Go Crazy.”
Deeper into the show, while “A Love Bizarre” was being performed, the stage shaped like Prince’s love symbol was invaded by a number of people, which included comedian Chris Rock (who sang a few lyrics), former NBA player Kris Humphries and reality television personality Kim Kardashian.
It was Karadashian’s second time onstage that evening, as Prince pulled her from the audience a few songs into the concert during a performance of “Controversy.” Kardashian’s poor dancing skills failed to impress The Purple One, who notoriously and unceremoniously kicked the Dancing With The Stars alum off the MSG stage.
Additional participants in the concert included ballet dancer Misty Copeland who came out during “The Beautiful Ones” and harmonica player Frédéric Yonnet who made several appearances. Watch Prince’s final concert at Madison Square Garden via the below videos:
