Potential The Kinks Reunion Looking Unlikely

For over a year now Dave & Ray Davies have been using the press to discuss the possibility of a The Kinks reunion as the legendary band celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2014. There were points in the last 12 months where it really seemed like the Davies would be able to put the band back together, but a new interview with Ray Davies shows there’s a major snag that will be incredibly difficult to overcome.

As he’s said all along, Ray wants any potential The Kinks reunion to include drummer Mick Avory. However, the inclusion of Avory is a deal breaker for Dave Davies. The Guardian’s Jasper Rees recently spoke with Ray Davies, who wanted to avoid the reunion discussion, but eventually relented. “I really can’t play with my brother as that name, the Kinks, and not have Mick in,” Davies told Rees. “Mick will work with him but Dave doesn’t want to work with Mick. Sibling rivalry is nothing on their rivalry. I have no idea what’s wrong with them.” Dave and Mick’s rivalry dates back to the band’s early days, when Davies took aim at Avory’s drum set on stage in 1965. When asked whether the Dave/Mick situation would be impossible to overcome, Ray responded “Yeah. This week it is.”

We’ll see where we go from here, though with just over two months left in the year it’s clear The Kinks won’t be reuniting in 2014 to celebrate their 50th anniversary.
