Steve Kimock & Friends :: 5.12 – 14.16 :: Sweetwater Music Hall :: Mill Valley, CA
Guitarist Steve Kimock held a series of Steve Kimock & Friends shows at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California Thursday through Saturday nights. Each of the shows saw a core band composed of keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, bassist Bobby Vega, drummer Jay Lane and multi-instrumentalist Leslie Mendelson. As expected, setlists were mixed with songs from the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia’s repertoires with additional covers and selections from Kimock’s other projects. Thursday’s concert saw the addition of guitarist Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz throughout the show highlighted by a second set opening of the Dead’s “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” followed by a segue into “Kiss” by Prince.
Dead guitarist and Sweetwater proprietor Bob Weir was on board for parts of Friday’s concert. Among Bobby’s contributions were leading takes on Bob Dylan’s “Queen Jane Approximately” and Martha & The Vandellas’ “Dancing In The Street” as well as Dead classics such as the first set closing “Bird Song” > “The Other One” > “Bird Song” sequence. Friday’s show also included guests Matthew Kelly on harmonica for “Dancing” and Sunshine Becker adding vocals on “Ancient Astronauts.”
Saturday’s concert was a family and friends affair as Steve’s son Miles Kimock joined in on guitar for the second set and Leslie’s sister Erin Mendelson also sat-in during the show, supplying additional vocals on “Bell Bottom Blues.” Last night Steve Kimock & Friends reconvened at Sweetwater for the 80th birthday celebration of counter-culture legend Wavy Gravy that also saw performances by ALO and Doobie Decibel System.
