Singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers tapped Fiona Apple and The National‘s to contribute to her new single “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night,” an updated take on Simon & Garfunkel’s rendition from 1966. Proceeds from the song will go towards Planned Parenthood.
The original “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night” is a sound collage that combines audio of a simulated news broadcast with the holiday classic “Silent Night.” Bridgers pulled headlines from 2019 for her version of the song, which was recorded at Sound City Studios in the San Fernando Valley. Phoebe produced the single with Ethan Gruska and Tony Berg.
“Happy Holidays to everyone whose family has been literally or figuratively torn apart by Donald Trump. And to my racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, hypocritical family members, fuck you,” reads a note from Phoebe. “Thanks Fiona, Matt, Simon, and Garfunkel.” Listen to Bridgers’ “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night” below:
