Phish Closes 2026 Riviera Maya Getaway In Mexico With Record-Breaking Jams

A +40-minute “A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing” was among the highlights of a night filled with adventurous experimentation.

Phish wrapped up their 2026 Riviera Maya destination event at Moon Palace in Mexico on Saturday night with a fourth and final show packed with adventurous improvisation. Extended versions of “My Friend, My Friend,” “A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing,” and “Beneath A Sea Of Stars” each pushed beyond any previous renditions, showcasing the band’s creative chemistry to cap a standout weekend.

“Mike’s Song” opened the show for the 30th time in Phish history. The jam featured impressive interplay between guitarist Trey Anastasio, keyboardist Page McConnell and bassist Mike Gordon as they locked into a melody reminiscent of the “Mind Left Body Jam.” In a rare transition, “Halley’s Comet” followed “Mike’s Song” for the first time, seamlessly giving way to an energetic “Weekapaug Groove.” Anastasio even slipped in a tease of the Sanford & Son theme song into his “Weekapaug” solo one day after the death of actor Grady Demond Wilson, who portrayed Lamont Sanford on the NBC sitcom.

The bluesy “Julius” kept the opening set flowing. The cut from the band’s 1994 studio album, Hoist, saw Page take an extended solo, Trey sing the final chorus an octave higher than usual and drummer Jon Fishman deliver perfectly placed fills to accentuate Anastasio’s fiery riffage. The band then dove into a remarkable “My Friend, My Friend,” turning the 1993 Rift rocker into a dark, swirling 25-minute epic that explored both minor-key grit and major-key triumph before Anastasio’s emphatic shouts punctuated the finish.

Mike Gordon stepped to the mic to front the subsequent “Mull,” complete with its “Could you pass me a taco?” lyric. “Mull” has appeared at all five Phish: Riviera Maya events since its August 2021 debut. “Vultures” followed for the first time since July 9, 2025 — the same night “Mull” was last played. Both tunes were delivered cleanly despite 29-show gaps. Anastasio hit a tonal wash as “Vultures” ended, cueing Fishman to kick off “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” aka “2001.” A straightforward run through “Drift While You’re Sleeping” closed the set.

The second frame opened with an expansive “A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing” that easily earned “longest-ever” honors, clocking in at 40 minutes. Phish navigated from the song’s standard structure into atmospheric, loosely grooving terrain. Fishman’s swing allowed Trey to balance sharp leads with rhythmic churn, while Page’s electric piano and Mike’s deep pocket held steady through a climax that recalled the jubilant feel of “Gotta Jibboo.

Out of the madness emerged a well-jammed “Beneath A Sea Of Stars” that unfolded as a truly egalitarian conversation, each member trading ideas in hushed, glowing waves. Trey asserted himself deep into the third “longest-ever version” of the night by driving the band toward a towering crescendo. After the peak, the band pulled back to a whisper, then launched into “Meatstick.” A nicely extended outro melted into a “Golden Age.” Phish kept the TV On The Radio cover between the lines and tacked on a “Slave To The Traffic Light” for good measure.

An encore of “Loving Cup” and “Harry Hood” sent fans on their way and ended a string of three debuts over the past three nights. The show marked the first time since 2013 classics “Mike’s Song,” “Weekapaug Groove,” “Slave To The Traffic Light” and “Harry Hood” were played on the same night and just the fourth time since 1990. Phish will return to the stage on April 16 to play their first of nine shows over three weeks at Sphere in Las Vegas.
