Listen To Phish Deliver Majestic ‘Harry Hood’ At St. Petersburg’s Mahaffey Theatre In 1994

The outrageous 20-minute version came during the second set of the band’s October 20, 1994 concert.

Twenty-nine years ago today Phish kicked off a four-night, four-show swing through Florida as part of Fall Tour 1994. Each concert on the tour was recorded for possible inclusion on the quartet’s first live album, A Live One, which would hit stores the following June. Phish’s Florida Fall ’94 run featured many highlights, one of which is one of the more well-jammed versions of “Harry Hood” in the band’s history, which took place on this date in 1994 at St. Peterburg’s Mahaffey Theatre.

The “Mahaffey Hood” stands in the shadows of another phenomenal version of the song Phish laid down in Gainesville just three nights later and made the A Live One cut. Both takes are similar in that the foursome goes well beyond the normal boundaries of the song, yet they take a different approach with each one. JamBase even pegged October 1994 as the top golden age for “Harry Hood” on a list published in 2014.

What makes the “Mahaffey Hood” so special are the many twists and turns the jam takes before resolving in a triumphant and euphoric climax. The quartet felt its way through the St. Petersburg take organically and were oh so patient in weaving in and out of grooves. This sense of adventure can be felt through every minute of the jam. As mentioned, the climax of the “Hood” from the Mahaffey Theatre is pure joy and features some of the fastest shredding guitarist Trey Anastasio has ever performed.

Up until August 2016 audience tapes were the only way to hear the “Harry Hood” Phish played 29 years ago tonight in St. Pete. Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro changed that by premiering the “Mahaffey Hood” as his final From The Archives selection at the Magnaball Festival.

Phish concluded an eight-show fall tour this past Sunday at Chicago's United Center. The band returns to Madison Square Garden to launch their 2023 New Year’s Run on December 28.
