Phish recently released pro-shot videos of “Free,” “Tweezer” and “Sigma Oasis.” The footage comes from the band’s 2022 summer tour concerts in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio as well the second and first nights of Atlantic City, New Jersey respectively.
All three performances feature extended jams beginning with the massive 25-minute “Free” from Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio on August 3. Phish performed “Free” for the first time in public at a Voters for Choice benefit concert hosted by Gloria Steinem on May 16 (a day before keyboardist Page McConnell’s 32nd birthday) in Lowell, Massachusetts.

The set saw a number of debuts including “Free’s” Billy Breathes companion “Theme From The Bottom” along with “Strange Design” and rarities “Spock’s Brain” and “Ha Ha Ha” as well as a cover of “Gloria.” Later that fall, Phish unleashed the longest version of “Free” to date in Landover, Maryland with a 33-minute rendition. While “Free” has been fairly fast and funky in the 2.0 and 3.0 eras, a 16-minute excursion arrived last fall in Chula Vista and the recent Blossom rendition was second only to the Landover monster.

The 2022 Atlantic City “Tweezer” — a song with numerous and well-documented jam exploits — came on August 6 during the second of three nights on the beach this past weekend. Read the “Tweezer” section of JamBase contributor Aaron Stein’s coverage of the show:
…few riffs can excite a crowd quite like the opening chords of “Tweezer.” This one got into some cool spaces quickly, Gordon continuing to assert himself as the guide through the evening’s improv, Trey again on the sparse echo, leaving the other three to set tone and tempo before hopping back in to fill the gaps. As the four reached mindmeld over multiple sections, the “Tweezer” felt like a great Dickens novel, ideas and characters and chapters weaving multiple narratives into a single brilliant piece of literature. The “Tweezer” jam stayed focused and eventually Trey returned the main theme, but in a completely distorted, dissonant form, as if “Tweezer” had been beaten up by the ocean waves, eroded and gnarly, but still recognizable, flashes of mid-’90s Phish oddity in the here and now.

The “Sigma Oasis” video is from the opening night of the Atlantic City run on August 5. Phish has waxed more and more exploratory with the title track to their 2020 studio album since its debut in Charleston on December 8, 2019. The quartet began toying with the song as a jam vehicle in earnest at Dick’s in 2021. A recent 17-minute version from Hartford nearly dethroned a nearly 19-minute rendition from Orange Beach earlier this year. But the 21.5-minute AC exploration took the crown so far.
