ekoostik hookah has announced the addition of bassist Phil Risko to the band. A talented member of the Ohio-grown family of musicians, Risko has been playing as a member of The Recipe since June of 2009, and is also known locally for his work in the Akron-based blues, funk and R&B band Greenlief. Risko will be taking the place of Cliff Starbuck, who left the band at the end of 2009 to pursue other interests.

ekoostik hookah, entering their 20th year together in 2010, welcomes the youth and creativity of 26-year-old Risko, who is a songwriter, guitarist, and drummer as well. The band has been using a planned six week hiatus to work closely with Risko as he becomes familiar with the large volume of songs in hookah’s repertoire. Full rehearsals will take place at a favorite spot in Columbus, OH prior to the start of hookah’s winter/spring tour schedule.

Risko joined the band onstage during the New Year’s Eve show for crowd pleasing renditions of “Sister Sugar” and “The Ballad of Sam McCully,” with departing member Cliff Starbuck introducing him to fans after the two took turns trading bass riffs throughout “Sister Sugar.” The audience was welcoming and enthusiastic, as Risko showed his musical prowess and ability to fit in perfectly with hookah. Risko’s first full performance with ekoostik hookah will be Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the Clazel Theater in Bowling Green, Ohio.
