Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh celebrated Halloween with a concert with The Terrapin Family Band on Tuesday night at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. The guest-filled performance saw the band joined by Preservation Hall Jazz Band, pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph, keyboardist Rob Barraco and vocalist Nicki Bluhm. Phil also received a ceremonial “Key To The Village Of Port Chester” from the city’s Trustee and Deputy Mayor Luis Marino.

The Grateful Dead’s classic “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)” opened last night’s show that also included The Terrapin Family Band guitarists Grahame Lesh and Ross James and drummer Alex Koford. Set one saw Phil and Grahame singing “The Mountain Song,” while Bluhm led on covers of Jerry Garcia Band staples “How Sweet It Is” and “Tore Up Over You.” Grahame sang lead on a cover of Neil Young’s “Old Man” and James fronted a take on Tom Petty’s “The Apartment Song” and the set included Dead favorites “Stagger Lee,” “Candyman” and the closer “Sugar Magnolia.”

New Orleans-based Preservation Hall Jazz Band came out for the second set which opened with a Halloween appropriate cover of Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves Of London.” Nicki then took the ensemble through CSN’s “Love The One You’re With” followed by Ross leading a romp through “Monster Mash.” The Preservation Hall horns augmented takes on “Fire On The Mountain” and “Sugaree” before the stage was turned over to the renowned group for a three-song mini-set.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band then exited as the ensemble returned to kick out Credence Clearwater Revival’s “Bad Moon Rising,” and the Grateful Dead’s “Playin’ In The Band “ > “Mountains Of The Moon” > “Uncle John’s Band.” The biblical rocker “Samson And Delilah” filled the encore slot and brought an end to Tuesday’s Philoween performance.
