Phil Lesh Teams With Anders, Stu, Joan, Marco & Joe At The Cap
While the two-set show was certainly heavy on classics from the Grateful Dead live repertoire, the ensemble threw in a number of covers as well. Early in the first set, Anders led the band through a cover of Neil Young’s “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere,” which was followed by a “China”/”Rider” pairing that featured a Joan Osborne-sung version of “Next Time You See Me” in the middle. The opening stanza came to a close with Allen singing “Standing On The Moon” and a “Not Fade Away” finale.
Anders also sang the evening’s second Neil Young cover, “Heart Of Gold,” which began the second set. Lesh then took the lead on his signature “Unbroken Chain.” Next up was Joan fronting the band on the Ike & Tina Turner hit “River Deep Mountain High” before it was back to the Dead repertoire for “Stella Blue” and “Terrapin Station.” From there, Anders led the group on Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower,” while Joan and Stu shared lead vocal duties on a cover of The Beatles’ “I Dig A Pony.” The second set came to a close with a “Turn On Your Lovelight” that featured “Who Do You Love” in the middle. Anders Osborne had one more turn up front for the show-closing “Morning Dew” encore.
