Stanley Jordan And Phil Lesh & Friends Go ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ At Jam-Filled ‘Clubhouse Session’

Phil Lesh & Friends assembled with guitarist Stanley Jordan at the Terrapin Clubhouse on July 23, the day after the ensemble performed at Sunday Daydream Vol. 3 in San Rafael, California. The band recorded two sets: the recently released Darkstarathon Episode 7 and a Clubhouse Sessions performance out today that can be viewed below.

The Grateful Dead bassist was joined by Jordan, Lebo (Dan Lebowitz) on pedal steel, keyboardist Jason Crosby, drummer John Molo and Grahame Lesh at the Terrapin Clubhouse. Phil Lesh & Friends‘ latest Clubhouse Sessions video spans just under an hour and ends with an instrumental “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” following runs through GD classics.

Phil Lesh and his bandmates begin the video by discussing how well the Sunday Daydream Vol. 3 concert went. “At one point I got this chill down my spine. It was just like the park in Terrapin only it was larger,” Phil said in comparing McNears Beach Park to the outdoor space adjacent to Terrapin Crossroads’ original location. “That’s one of my favorite things to do in the world, to play live in front of people.”

The sextet lit into “Crazy Fingers” to start the set. Grahame Lesh handled lead vocals on the first of four songs penned by Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter Phil & Friends played during the set that the Grateful Dead debuted in the ’70s. Phil’s son also captained the ensuing “Bertha.”

Phil Lesh & Friends continued on with a “Ship Of Fools” beautifully sung by Lebo. The ballad gave way to an exploratory “Eyes Of The World.” Stanley Jordan starred on the 11-minute version featuring Lebo on lead vocals. Jordan was also featured in the set-closing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow,” an instrumental that has long been part of the guitarist’s live repertoire.
