Relix shared video of Phil Lesh & Friends performing “Bird Song” led by Mikaela Davis on vocals and harp. The performance took place on Saturday, October 15 during the second of three concerts kicking off Phil & Friends’ nine-show residency at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York.

Although a staple, “Bird Song” was a fitting inclusion for Phil’s kick-off weekend at The Cap as the Grateful Dead unveiled the tune at The Capitol Theatre on February 19, 1971. “Bird Song” later appeared on Jerry Garcia’s 1972 debut solo album, Garcia, but never appeared on a Grateful Dead studio album.

Phil Lesh brought “Bird Song” back to The Cap on October 15 as the penultimate song of the first frame following “Loser” and ahead of set-closer “Jack Straw.” The lineup on Saturday consisted of guitarists Eric Krasno, John Scofield and Grahame Lesh, saxophonist/flutist Karl Denson, drummer Alex Koford and Mikaela Davis on harp with keyboardist Steve Molitz filling in for Ivan Neville.

An already painfully gorgeous song, Davis doubled down on the wow factor with a soaring vocal performance and cloud-hopping harp on the 15-minute “Bird Song” which also showcased the copious talents of the entire ensemble.
