Phil Lesh & Friends Dedicate Their Show At The Capitol Theatre To Gregg Allman
By Jeffrey Greenblatt May 28, 2017 • 7:13 am PDT
Last night Phil Lesh returned to the Capitol Theatre in the New York City suburb of Port Chester to close out their two-night run at the historic venue. Earlier in the day it was reported that Gregg Allman had passed away from complications of liver cancer. As a way to pay their respects to the Allman Brothers co-founder, who had played the venue with the seminal Southern Rock band in the 1970s, The Capitol Theatre’s marquee read ‘RIP Gregg / You’re Our Blue Sky, Thank You.’
Before the rest of his band took to the stage, Phil Lesh began the night by acknowledging the lose of Allman stating, “We lost an American original today – Gregg Allman. He was a man of my generation, a survivor like he had to be to get this far, and he will be sorely missed. I’d like to dedicate this show, and get all the love that we can generate here to the memory of Gregg Allman.”
Lesh’s band for night two had one notable change from Friday, with guitarist Neal Casal (The Chris Robinson Brotherhood) taking Jackie Greene’s place. The night began with “Box Of Rain,” a song that was originally written as a tribute to Lesh’s dying father and sung last night as a touching nod to Gregg Allman. From their the band kicked the first set into gear with “Althea,” Bob Dylan’s “It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Take A Train To Cry,” “Loser,” and “Here Comes Sunshine” > “Stagger Lee.” The band closed things out with a segued pair of covers by The Velvet Underground and The Rolling Stones with “Sweet Jane” > “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.”
The eight-piece act started off their second set in impressive fashion with a lengthy “Uncle John’s Band” > “Playing In The Band” > “Uncle John’s Band” that also included a jam on “Dark Star.” Lesh & Co. next honored the late Gregg Allman with a take on one of his signature tunes “Midnight Rider,” which became a cathartic group sing-a-long for everyone in the building. From there band worked their way through “Lady With A Fan” > “Terrapin Station” > “I Know You Rider” and a set-closing “Sugar Magnolia,” before returning to the stage to encore with the day appropriate party anthem “One More Saturday Night.”
