Phil Lesh & East Coast All-Stars Debut At Terrapin Crossroads

By Scott Bernstein Oct 7, 2014 6:50 am PDT

Last night bassist Phil Lesh was joined by a band dubbed “The East Coast All Stars,” which featured guitarists Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger, keyboardist Jason Crosby and drummer Joe Russo, for a performance in The Grate Room at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California.

Lesh was so enamored at the group’s performance he mentioned “this is the shit!” when introducing the band. Russo was also head over heels about the ensemble’s performance, sharing “I’ll just go ahead and say it…tonight was one of…if not the best, Grateful Dead song book experiences I’ve ever had,” on Facebook.

The quintet didn’t just stick to songs from the Grateful Dead song book as they also worked covers of Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City,” The Band’s “Ophelia” and Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue” into their two-hour-plus set. Metzger and Hamilton traded off lead vocals on a number of the tunes. For the encore, the band served up a “Playing In The Band” sandwich with “Terrapin Station” as the filling.
