Pearl Jam Performs ‘Present Tense’ In Budapest In 1996: Official Video
Today, Pearl Jam was due to return to Hungary for their first concert in the country since they made their Budapest debut on November 17, 1996. The band’s European Tour 2020 was postponed due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic and Pearl Jam continues to unearth video from their previous visits to the cities on the run by sharing “Present Tense” from the 1996 show.
Pearl Jam’s November 17, 1996 concert took place at Budapest’s Sports Hall. Budapest Arena was supposed to host the band today before the pandemic led to a pause in live music.
The 1996 performance featured an 18-song main set followed by a seven-song encore. “Present Tense” was played in the middle of the encore. Guitarist Mike McCready wrote the music for “Present Tense” to accompany lyrics penned by frontman Eddie Vedder. Pearl Jam released the song three months prior to the Budapest show on their fourth studio album, No Code.
“Present Tense” was debuted live by Pearl Jam on September 14, 1996 at The Showbox in their hometown of Seattle. The band has since played the song at over 20% of their concerts as per Live Footsteps.
