The Playing For Change Foundation celebrated 10 years of connecting musicians from around the world by hosting the We Are One benefit concert at the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. Playing For Change arose from the common belief that music has the power to connect people regardless of their differences. We Are One saw the Playing For Change Band, made up of 10 musicians from 10 different countries, joined by a variety of guests.

The night started off with a pair of songs from Nahko. Harmonica wiz Lee Oskar, famed multi-instrumentalist Ellis Hall and drummer James Gadson were among the Playing For Change Band’s special guests at various points in the evening. Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and John McFee led the ensemble on such Doobie Brothers classics as “Black Water,” “China Grove” and “Listen To The Music,” while Paul Barrere, Kenny Gradney and Fred Tackett’s time with the group including a sequence combining Little Feat gems “Willin'” and “Don’t Bogart That Joint.” For the grand finale, most of the musicians came together for a rousing cover of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” in honor of the first song recorded for the PFC project. All proceeds from the event will benefit free music education.
