Neil Young Shares Live Performance Of ‘Southern Man’

By Andy Kahn Jun 4, 2020 7:07 am PDT

Neil Young shared a live performance video of his song, “Southern Man.” The footage comes from the forthcoming concert film, Polar Vortex, which was recorded in 2019.

Young originally released the politically charged “Southern Man” on his 1970 album, After The Gold Rush. The Canadian singer-songwriter received U.S. citizenship earlier this year. Young posted the “Southern Man” clip on his Neil Young Archives website with the accompanying message below addressing the recent protests surrounding the death of George Floyd and others:

Here’s me as an old guy singin’ his 50-year-old song that was written after countless years of racism in the USA … and look at us today! This has been going on for way too long. It’s not just “Southern Man” now. It’s everywhere across the USA. It’s time for real change … new laws … new rules for policing … “Change gonna come at last …”
