Neil Young & Promise Of The Real Fit Debuts & Rarities Into 1st Show Of 2018

Neil Young and Promise of The Real played their first of two warmup shows on Tuesday night at the 604-capacity Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, California. The quintet worked a pair of debuts as well as rarities into their first non-festival performance since October 13, 2016.

Young, guitarists Lukas Nelson and Micah Nelson, bassist Corey McCormick, drummer Anthony Logerfo and percussionist Tato Melgar played a total of 15 songs over the course of their 105-minute performance in Santa Barbara. The group opened with “Rockin’ In The Free World,” a staple usually reserved for the end of concerts.

Neil & POTR then put the focus on material from Young’s 2010 album Le Noise. The series of five songs from the Daniel Lanois-produced LP started with “Love & War,” “Peaceful Valley Boulevard” and “Sign Of Love.” All three were last performed by Young in 2011 and had never been played with a full band. Next came the live debuts of “Someone’s Gonna Rescue You” and “Angry World” from Le Noise.

Young went on to strap on an acoustic for “Human Highway,” Harvest cut “Out On The Highway” and Harvest Moon chestnut “Unknown Legend.” Micah and Lukas Nelson were then given a chance to lead the band on their own songs with “The Ocean” and “Forget About Georgia” respectively. Tuesday’s main set came to a close with “Love & Only Love” and “Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black).” Young & Promise Of The Real went on to encore with “Fuckin’ Up” and “Roll Another Number.” Neil & POTR return to the Lobero tonight and then play the Arroyo Seco Weekend festival in Pasadena, California on Saturday.
