Neil Young’s Coastal Tour continued at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park in San Diego on Tuesday. The legendary singer-songwriter played “Like A Hurricane” on pump organ for the first time in 20 years toward the end of his set.

Young’s California-focused Coastal Tour marks his first extended trek in four years. The run has seen Neil performing mostly solo, utilizing a number of instruments including electric and acoustic guitars, piano, harmonica and pump organ.

In San Diego, Young stuck close to the setlist he’s been performing on the Coastal Tour, which he’s loaded with rarities from his massive catalog. The show got underway with “I’m The Ocean,” marking just the 21st play of the Mirror Ball cut since he debuted it in Seattle with Pearl Jam in 1995.

Neil has also been including gems from his Buffalo Springfield days with “Burned” and “On The Way Home” appearing in San Diego once again alongside additional deep cuts like “If You Got Love,” “A Dream That Can Last” (appearing on 1994 Crazy Horse album Sleeps With Angels but not played live until 2023), Sleeps With Angels’ “My Heart” and additional Mirror Ball tracks “Song X” and “Throw Your Hatred Down.”

After Sleeps With Angels’ “Prime Of Life” and “When I Hold You In My Arms” off 2002’s Are You Passionate?, Young broke out “Like A Hurricane” for the first time since September 19, 2019 when he performed it with Promise Of The Real. The ‘23 Coastal Tour play marked the first solo edition since January 28, 2019.

Neil debuted the rocking studio version of the song first appearing on 1977’s American Stars ‘N Bars on December 13, 1975 in Santa Cruz, California with Crazy Horse. Young took to playing the beautifully haunting solo version of the number on pump organ in 1992. Neil had not played “Like A Hurricane” on pump organ since May 8, 2003 in The Netherlands. He had not performed the song in the U.S. since 1993 until Tuesday in San Diego, as per Neil Young fan site Sugar Mountain, where he accompanied himself on harmonica. Watch below:

Young has been closing his Coastal Tour concerts with some more well-known hits. Following “Like A Hurricane,” he delivered the CSNY anti-war anthem “Ohio” and closed the main set with “Heart Of Gold.” The encore consisted of “Love Earth” from 2022’s World Record and Neil’s cover of Ian Tyson’s “Four Strong Winds.”

Neil Young’s Coastal Tour rolls on with concerts at the Greek Theatres in Los Angeles and Berkeley on Thursday and Saturday respectively. Check out his full tour routing with ticket info below:
