Residents of Greenland are able to keep on “Rockin’ in the Free World” with free access to Neil Young’s vast music catalog at neilyoungarchives.com. Young’s gesture to the headline-making territory of Denmark was an “offer of Peace and Love.”
Young posted a message on the Times Contrarian section of his archives website announcing the year of free access to “our friends in Greenland.”
“I hope my Music and Music Films will ease some of the unwarranted stress and threats you are experiencing from our unpopular and hopefully temporary government,” Young wrote. “It is my sincere wish for you to be able to enjoy all of my music in your beautiful Greenland home, in its highest quality.”
A cellphone with Greenland’s Country Code is needed to gain access to NYA. Renewal is free if still residing in Greenland.
United States President Donald Trump has repeatedly called to have the U.S. seize control of Greenland. Trump recently walked back threats to use military force on the Arctic island. According to Trump, a framework deal regarding the U.S. and Greenland was agreed to when he met with NATO Chief Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
The Canadian-born Young, who holds dual citizenship with the United States, has frequently criticized the Trump administration. The 80-year-old rocker has a long history of political activism, writing such protest songs as “Ohio,” “Alabama,” “Mideast Vacation,” “Long Walk Home,” and his newest original taking aim at the Trump administration, “Big Crime.”
