Rising star Natalie Brooke dropped The Collective She – Live At Orion, a five-song, 45-minute album spotlighting improv-laced performances she pulled off with her band live at their Orion rehearsal space. The new effort mixes previously released material and live staples to present a snapshot of the quartet’s live shows.
The Baltimore-based keyboardist, composer and bandleader’s band finds her joined by guitarist Luke Walker, bassist Jacob Nadeau and drummer Nathan Shulkin. Nadeau handled mix and mastering duties for The Collective She – Live At Orion. The album art was created by Haiden Ferrell.
“The band and I set out to make a record in our rehearsal space that distinctly captured our live sound,” explained Brooke. “These are our songs not as studio cuts, but as the jammed-out versions.”
“It’s five songs, 45 minutes, and it’s a real good time,” Brooke added. “I love the way this album sounds. I love the way it feels like highway and road trip music, especially for people who like jams. It’s the kind of music I put on when I’ve got hours to kill driving in the van and I want the time to fly. It’s live and alive.”
Brooke’s latest studio album, Measured In Moments, arrived last October. The new project doesn’t repeat any songs featured on the 11-track studio set. Among the standouts on The Collective She – Live At Orion is the 14-minute barnburner “Idnfuckno.” Brooke’s fiery Clavinet work is at the heart of the expansive, jam-filled number.
