My Morning Jacket released a new album entitled The Waterfall II this past Friday that was recorded during the same sessions that yielded The Waterfall in 2015. Frontman Jim James revealed MMJ additionally has a “completely new record,” which at one point he said the band needs to finish and at another said is “done” during an interview for the Kyle Meredith With… podcast.
James confirmed Jacket’s hiatus is over but that the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic screwed up the band’s plan to release their “completely new album” and tour behind it this fall. “That’s one of the most frustrating things about the pandemic,” James said. “We did four shows in 2019 that really re-energized us and brought us back to life. We went in the studio and we have a whole new record that we’re finishing, a completely new record and dates set up for this fall that we had to cancel.”

“So now that’s part of the puzzle that everybody’s trying to figure out,” James added. “The new album is done, but whenever we release it, we want to play shows for it. Obviously, it’s like we want to make it a ‘thing’ because it’s so exciting to have these new songs and want to play them live. We really recorded ’em really live. It was just the five of us and literally nobody else. Just the five of us and we played, and it was so exciting and fun but now we’re in this holding pattern.”
James felt by releasing The Waterfall II it was “a cool way to ease the band back into life.” The Louisville native also discussed the making of both Waterfall albums, his work with S.G. Goodman, life for him during the pandemic, the police killing of Breonna Taylor and more. Listen to Jim’s appearance on Kyle Meredith With… below:
