My Morning Jacket broke out a cover of John Prine’s “All The Best” at the start of their encore Friday night at The Met in Philadelphia. The performance coincided with what would have been the beloved singer-songwriter’s 79th birthday.
Prine died in April 2020 at age 73 due to complications from COVID-19. Months later, My Morning Jacket honored Prine by being part of the Picture Show: A Tribute Celebrating John Prine event held online due to the pandemic.
MMJ were also among the many musicians who participated in the 2010 tribute album Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine. The band covered “All The Best” from Prine’s 1991 album, The Missing Years.
In support of the tribute album, Prine performed “All The Best” with My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James on an episode of The Late Show With David Letterman. Prine and MMJ played “All The Best” together again at the 2017 Newport Folk Festival. James also shared a recording of the song after learning of Prine’s illness in 2020.
The concert at The Met also included the rarity “Chills,” the Z bonus track included on the recently released 20th anniversary deluxe edition of the album. Watch video of “All The Best” and stream official nugs audio of the show below:
