My Morning Jacket kept its streak of nightly Grateful Dead covers and guest appearances intact on Wednesday at The Fillmore in San Francisco. Australian singer-songwriter Grace Cummings joined the band for its first performances of “Scarlet Begonias” and “Over My Head” during the green-themed fourth night of a seven-show residency.
The evening also included an encore-opening “Bein’ Green” from frontman Jim James and Jacket’s debut rendition of his solo song “Come Again.” Each concert of the residency carries a different color theme, with Wednesday’s show bringing the run past its halfway point.
Cummings first emerged late in the main set as MMJ paired “River Road,” from last year’s is, with AC/DC’s “Ride On.” The collaboration revisited a combination the musicians debuted near Dallas in April 2025, when Cummings was touring with Jacket. They performed “Ride On” together four times that month.
Grace stayed aboard for the band’s first take on the Grateful Dead’s “Scarlet Begonias.” Cummings shared vocals with James before channeling Donna Jean Godchaux with wordless wails toward the end of the song, which originally appeared on the Dead’s 1974 album From The Mars Hotel.
“Scarlet Begonias” followed “Sugaree” with Molly Tuttle on opening night, “Brown-Eyed Women” with Tyler Ballgame on night two and Tuesday’s “Franklin’s Tower” debut with Karina Rykman. Karina Rykman and Mikaela Davis both participated in the third show, extending the residency’s run of special guests.
MMJ followed Wednesday’s “Scarlet Begonias” with “Run It,” “Victory Dance” and “Wasted” to finish the main set. James returned alone on acoustic guitar to begin the encore with the band’s first “Bein’ Green,” the song associated with The Muppets’ Kermit The Frog.
James explained that a picture of Kermit on one of The Fillmore’s daily flyers helped inspire the selection. “That’s a sign I need to play this one,” he said. The frontman’s Muppets connections stretch back well before his “Rainbow Connection” duet with Kermit at Newport Folk Festival in 2019. MMJ contributed “Our World,” from Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas, to the aptly titled 2011 compilation Muppets: The Green Album. James also wrote songs for an unrealized Electric Mayhem project that eventually became “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)” and “Outta My System” on Circuital. Animal later joined Jacket for “One Big Holiday” at Newport in 2023.
Cummings then returned for “Over My Head,” with only her and James onstage. James accompanied her on acoustic guitar as she sang Christine McVie’s part on the song McVie wrote for Fleetwood Mac’s 1975 self-titled album.
The rest of the band came back for “Slow Slow Tune,” “Lay Low” and “One Big Holiday” to complete the five-song encore. Earlier highlights included the “Compound Fracture” opener, “Cobra” into “War Begun” and the first MMJ performance of “Come Again,” the lead single from James’ recently released solo album, Wowed Out.
My Morning Jacket’s Fillmore residency resumes on Friday, October 9, with additional shows on October 10 and 11. Watch footage of Wednesday’s collaborations below:
