Jim James announced Wowed Out, his first new solo record since 2018, which arrives on Friday, August 28 via ATO Records. The My Morning Jacket frontman previewed the 10-track effort with “Come Again,” its lead single.
Wowed Out marks James’ fifth solo LP. Produced solely by Jim James, the songs on the record were developed last fall from material he originally composed with longtime friend Brian Reitzell (known for his extensive work with Sofia Coppola, including such films as Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides) for a pair of early 2010s film-scoring projects.
“For years I kept returning to all this music we’d made and couldn’t figure out what to do with it,” James noted. “But for some reason, last year everything started flowing in a really beautiful way.”
Jim James frames Wowed Out around the idea of sensory overload in the modern age, with the title reflecting a feeling of being both overwhelmed and searching for deeper meaning. The album explores themes of awe, disconnection and rediscovery, as James grapples with the push and pull between constant technological stimulation and the need for something more grounding.
“There’ve been times in my life where I’ve felt lost or depressed, but music has always been the thing that pulls me back,” the My Morning Jacket leader added. “When I think about making this album, it almost feels like I was in some kind of dream and now I’m trying to remember what the dream was about. The whole thing brought me a lot of joy and comfort while I was making it, and I hope it brings everyone else a little joy and comfort too.”
Out today from Jim James is “Come Again,” the first taste of Wowed Out. The album’s lead single arrived along with a video conceptualized, filmed and edited by Jim, with analog videographic illusions by W.G. Rickel.
“‘Come Again’ came from feeling discouraged by how much things are changing in directions I don’t agree with, but trying to remember that there’s still so much beauty to be experienced,” explained Jim James. “You’ve got to just keep going and keep trying again and again and again to find joy.”
