moe. returned to New Orleans on Tuesday to perform at the first day of the fourth annual Daze Between New Orleans event. The band, who are celebrating their 35th anniversary in 2025, called upon the Dumpstaphunk horn section of trombonist Alex Wasily, trumpeter Ashlin Parker and saxophonist Brad Walker to join them for the back half of a marathon set at the iconic Mahalia Jackson Theater.
Bassist Rob Derhak led the sextet through the cajun-infused “Stranger Than Fiction” to open a set that came between guest-filled performances from lespecial and Umphrey's McGee. Guitarist Chuck Garvey then belted out “All Roads Lead To Home” before moe. presented a trio of songs from their recently released album Circle Of Giants, as keyboardist Nate Wilson fronted “In Stride,” guitarist Al Schnier helmed “Band In The Sky” and Derhak captained “Ups & Downs.”
The Buffalo-birthed jam ensemble devoted the next 20 minutes of their set to a sequence linking fan favorites “Spine Of A Dog” and “Buster.” Schnier introduced the Dumpstaphunk Horns ahead of moe.’s first cover of the Little Feat classic “Spanish Moon” since New Year’s Eve 2022. Wasily, Parker and Walker then added to “Blonde Hair Blue Eyes,” which Rob wrote about his daughter Emma.
The brassified action continued with a Schnier-sung take on The Band’s “Ophelia,” staples “Nebraska” and “Spaz Medicine” and moe.’s recently revived cover of Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Turn On Your Lovelight.” The expanded lineup then romped through Blue Oyster Cult’s “Godzilla” and wrapped up the set with a “Happy Hour Hero” featuring stellar solos from Chuck Garvey, Ashlin Parker and Alex Wasily.
