Earlier this year Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite released their sophomore album together No Mercy In This Land via ANTI- Records. The LP was the follow-up to the pair’s Grammy-winning debut Get Up!. Harper and Musselwhite, who are currently on tour in support of No Mercy In This Land, are the subjects of a new animated mini-documentary.

Narrated by Mavis Staples, the short film details the lives of both performers separately through the fateful moment they were introduced and runs up until the present. Musselwhite’s story is highlighted starting with his being run out of Memphis for moonshining to his days in Chicago, where his career took off after being invited to sit-in with Muddy Waters. Charlie went on to land in San Francisco during the Summer of Love, as he performed there for the first time at The Fillmore opening for Cream.

Harper’s tale involves being born into a musical family who owned the famed Folk Music Center in Claremont, California. Ben served as Taj Mahal’s apprentice, was signed to a major label deal and was eventually introduced to Musselwhite by John Lee Hooker. The blues great had the pair record together for the first time.
