Mike Gordon Teams With Turkuaz Horns & Participates In Twitter Q&A

Bassist Mike Gordon and his five-piece played just their second and last set of the summer on Sunday afternoon at the Peach Music Festival in Scranton. Gordon, guitarist Scott Murawski, drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Robert Walter and percussionist Craig Myers issue a new album next month and follow it up with a fall tour. Mike’s set at Peach included a guest appearance from the Turkuaz Horns and an audience recording of the set recently surfaced.
The quintet opened with “Long Black Line” and then played “Whirlwind” off the forthcoming OGOGO. A take on “Sugar Shack” came next ahead of an impressive “Peel” > “Marissa” > “How Do I Know” > “Crazy Sometimes” sequence. Both “Marissa” and “Crazy Sometimes” will be found on OGOGO and were played by Phish this past summer. The Turkuaz Horn section of Greg Sanderson and Josh Schwartz on saxophones and Chris Brouwers on trumpet emerged during “Face” and stuck around for the “Victim 3D” finale.
Mike participated in a few Twitter Q&As recently. Gordon was driving to the festival with Walter and asked fans to submit questions and also took queries on his way home. Some of the interesting things we learned from the sessions were his favorite donut from the Baker’s Dozen run was strawberry, his favorite cover from the residency was Phish’s take on “Everything In Its Right Place” by Radiohead and his favorite print of the eight from the 13-show affair was Landland’s “donut shop” poster. He also revealed the foursome’s 30+ minute “Lawn Boy” was “premediatated” and that the no repeats ploy was planned “long before it happened.”
Gordon also mentioned Prince’s “Starfish & Coffee” was among potential covers Phish discussed performing at Madison Square Garden that didn’t make the cut. We learned Mike’s favorite Baker’s Dozen show was the third one, aka “Red Velvet,” and that he plans to play all the songs off OGOGO live. The bassist also asked fans a question of his own:
