Bassist Mike Gordon and acclaimed fingerstyle guitarist Leo Kottke appear in NPR Music’s latest Tiny Desk (Home) Concert with help from Mike’s Phish band mate, drummer Jon Fishman. Leo and Mike focused on songs from their recently released Noon studio album, which like this session features contributions from Fishman.
Kottke and Gordon recorded remotely with Leo performing at Creation Audio in Minnesota and Mike joined by Fish at Burlington’s Tank Recording Studio. The session begins with Noon opener “Flat Top.” Leo then fields a call from a high school friend named Sam and goes on to explain how he met Sam. Gordon follows by discussing his history with his band mate. “Jon Fishman and I have been playing together for a long time,” Mike said.

“We did 2,000 gigs together and a lot of practices. We have a telepathy thing going,” Gordon added. “Plus, he practices like eight hours a day, all his limbs work differently, he’s my hero!” Mike then introduced Fishman, who added to “The Only One.” Next up was a duo performance of “Sheets” before the drummer returned to accompany the pair on “I Am Random.”
