Bassist Mike Gordon completed a run of two sold-out shows at The Independent in San Francisco on Thursday night. Guitarist Scott Murawski led the band on a debut cover of “Gimme Some Lovin'” to end the evening’s first set.
Gordon, Murawski, drummer John Kimock, percussionist Craig Myers and keyboardist Robert Walter fit a number of songs from the recently released OGOGO within Thursday’s performance. “Equilibrium,” “Whirlwind,” “Victim,” “Victim 3D,” “Steps” and “Pendulum” all made the setlist. Murawski was chosen to front the Mike Gordon debut of “Gimme Some Lovin’,” a song penned by Steve Winwood, Spencer Davis and Muff Winwood. Scott had previously covered the tune with Max Creek. “Gimme Some Lovin'” was originally recorded by the Spencer Davis Group and scored the band a top ten single on both sides of the Atlantic in 1966.
The Phish bassist and his band also offered versions of Myers’ “Angatta,” Max Creek’s “Cruel World,” the Gordon/Murawski banter-filled “Trapezoidal Sunshine” and Jon Cleary’s “Got To Be More Careful” within the opening frame. Mike and his troupe fit “Peel” off 2014’s Overstep and a cover of Tame Impala’s “Mind Mischief” within the second set. Next up for the quintet is a Friday night performance at Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles.
