Mike Gordon Debuts ‘Check Your Pepper’ In Madison

By Scott Bernstein Nov 20, 2016 1:24 pm PST

Phish bassist Mike Gordon is currently on the road with his five-piece band featuring John Kimock on drums, Scott Murawski on guitar, Craig Myers on percussion and Robert Walter on keyboards. Gordon and the band visited the Majestic Theatre in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday night and Periscope video of the show has surfaced.

Mike & Co. began the show with “Horizon Line” off 2010’s Moss and “Cruel World” from Murawski’s main band, Max Creek. The five-piece then debuted a new original thought to be titled “Check Your Pepper” from a phrase Myers coined. A lengthy “Ether” off 2014’s Overstep gave way to a take on the Phish classic “Meat,” which led into a set-closing “Long Black Line.”

The second set started with Scott and Mike’s “Yarmouth Road” and “Daisy Hill Grove” ahead of “The Field” from the Max Creek repertoire. While Gordon and Murawski’s “Say Something” was performed twice by Phish during the Summer of 2013 and not again since, the song continues to have a home with the five-piece and was played as part of Saturday’s second set. Up next was a cover of Robert Palmer’s “Looking For Clues” before the Tom Petty-esque “How Many People Are You” brought the second set to a close. Mike and the band then said farewell with a “Funky Bitch” (Son Seals) encore. The quintet plays Park West in Chicago on Sunday.
