Midnight Oil Bust Out Rarely Played Grateful Dead Cover In Oakland

By Jeffrey Greenblatt May 28, 2017 12:59 pm PDT

Last night Midnight Oil brought their latest reunion tour to the Fox Theater in Oakland. The Australian rock band seized the opportunity for being in the heart of Grateful Dead territory by busting a cover that they hadn’t played in 24 years!

During the band’s first encore The Oils dusted off their version of the Dead’s “Wharf Rat,” a song that they had originally recorded for the 1991 tribute album Deadicated. The five-piece band had previously only performed their chugging, angst-y version of the tale of August West live twice back in 1993, making it a true rarity even for their hardcore fans. After the song lead singer Peter Garrett tipped his hat to special occasion the by saying “What better place to do it than here?”
