British musician Michael Kiwanuka remixed “13th Century Metal,” a song originally featured on Brittany Howard‘s debut solo album, Jaime. The track, released by ATO Records, marks Kiwanuka’s first mix for another artist.

Michael added a funky Afrobeat-inspired groove to “13th Century Metal.” He kept the Alabama Shakes frontwoman’s spoken-word vocals at the forefront of the mix.

“I was so excited to get to work on this project as I’ve always been a big fan of Brittany’s music,” Kiwanuka explained. “Knowing this particular track and being such a fan of her voice, I wanted to not meddle with her voice, and then to make it front and center. She sounds so victorious when she sings and speaks, so the music I made was governed by that.”

The release of Kiwanuka’s “13th Century Metal” remix follows EARTHGANG and Bon Iver remixes of Jaime tracks. Hear Michael Kiwanuka’s mix of “13th Century Metal” below:
