Maggie Rogers continued her tour of North American arenas with a concert at Chicago’s United Center on Thursday night. Legendary vocalist Mavis Staples made a surprise guest appearance, joining Rogers on The Staple Singers’ favorite “I’ll Take You There.”
The Chicago native Staples was summoned to the stage in the middle of Rogers’ set. The pair teamed up on “I’ll Take You There,” which Staples recorded as a member of the influential gospel/R&B group The Staple Singers led by her late father Roebuck “Pops” Staples and featuring Mavis’ siblings.

During Thursday’s performance of “I’ll Take You There,” Staples led a call-and-response sequence with the audience.
“My family, The Staple Singers, we’ve been taking y’all there for over 70 years,” the 85-year-old Staples told the United Center audience. “Now, we want you to take us there.”
Rogers then instructed the crowd to sing along to the “I’ll Take You There” chorus. Many in the nearly full arena responded by adding their voices to the song that was a hit for The Staple Singers in 1972.
