Mavis Staples Honors Prince & Covers ‘Purple Rain’ At Coachella

One of the first artists to pay tribute to the late great Prince at yesterday’s opening day of the second weekend of the Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival was Mavis Staples. The legendary vocalist shared her memories of The Purple One and briefly covered one of his songs during her afternoon set at Empire Polo Club in Indio, California

“Yesterday, I lost a dear friend, my son, and he was my angel – talking about Prince y’all,” Staples told the audience. “I was on Prince’s label, Paisley Park, for seven years. During that seven years I adopted him, he was the most beautiful spirit that I have ever met. He’s a gentlemen, he’s humble and he’s respectful – he did everything he promised me.”

Staples also talked meeting Prince for the first time when he attended a The Staples Singers concert, and she held a moment of silence for her late friend. Watch Mavis’ touching story and brief cover performance of “Purple Rain” captured by Rob Doughty below:
