Warren Haynes, Slash and Billy Gibbons are among the musicians taking part in all-star tribute to legendary rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd at the 2023 CMT Music Awards. The ceremony will air live from the Moody Center in Austin, Texas this Sunday, April 2 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+.
Lynyrd Skynyrd released their debut album, (Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd), 50 years ago in 1973. Gary Rossington, co-founding guitarist and the last surviving original member, recently died at age 71.
Haynes, Slash and Gibbons will be on electric guitar for a two-song performance featuring Cody Johnson and Paul Rodgers on lead vocals. Wynonna Judd and LeAnn Rimes will provide backing vocals as “The Honkettes.” The extremely talented ensemble will be rounded out by keyboardist Chuck Leavell, bassist Ethan Pilzer and drummer Rich Redmond.
Gary Rossington’s widow and bandmate, Dale Krantz Rossington, will be in the house to watch the tribute as will fellow Skynyrd members Johnny Van Zant and Rickey Medlock. Others set to perform at the 2023 CMT Music Awards include The Black Crowes and Darius Rucker, Alanis Morissette with Ingrid Andress, Lainey Wilson, Gwen Stefani with Carly Pearce and more.
