Singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams shared the stage with folk legend Ramblin’ Jack Elliott on Friday night at the Uptown Theatre in Napa, California. The pair collaborated on a cover of Elizabeth Cotten’s gem “Freight Train.”
Williams announced the arrival of Elliott a few songs into her set.
“For those of you who aren’t aware, Jack was an important figure in the early folk music days, back in the sixties,” Williams said. “He met with the likes of Bob Dylan, Odetta, and other great artists like that. Rode a motorcycle all over the place, raised hell.”

Williams also explained that “Freight Train” was one of the first songs she learned to play on guitar. She mentioned Elliott, who recently celebrated his 93rd birthday, knew the song’s composer, lauded guitarist Elizabeth Cotten.
