As reported, $3.8 million dollars was raised for non-profit organization God’s Love We Deliver on Thursday at the eighth annual star-studded Love Rocks NYC benefit concert. The action-packed show, which started at 8:15 p.m., came to a close after midnight with Nile Rodgers, Joss Stone, Dave Grohl, Trombone Shorty, Tom Morello, Bettye LaVette and many more of the evening’s performers packing the Beacon Theatre stage to cover David Bowie‘s “Let’s Dance.”
“Let’s Dance” is the title track to the late David Bowie’s 1983 studio album. Nile Rodgers co-produced the LP which spawned singles “Let’s Dance,” “China Girl,” “Modern Love” and “Without You.” The title track hit the top spot on charts in many countries including the U.S. and U.K. as “Let’s Dance” became the biggest selling single of Bowie’s illustrious career.

Earlier in the night, Nile Rodgers and members of his Chic organization joined the outstanding house band led by bassist Will Lee for takes on Sister Sledge’s 1979 smash “We Are Family” and Chic’s own hit from the same year “Good Times.” Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Rodgers co-produced both songs as he did “Let’s Dance.”
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl made his Love Rocks NYC debut before Rodgers’ mini-set last night. Grohl played guitar and handled lead vocals on the Foo Fighters classic “Everlong” and a cover of Paul McCartney & Wings’ “Live And Let Die.” The full house band featuring Will Lee, Eric Krasno, Larry Campbell, Steve Gadd, Shawn Pelton, Michael Bearden, Jeff Bakbo and Pedrito Martinez backed Grohl as they did the evening’s other performers. Both songs also included contributions from the God’s Love Horns and We Deliver Singers. Grohl hopped behind the kit on “Let’s Dance” at the end of the night.
Will Lee put down his bass and took his role as musical director literally by conducting the “Let’s Dance” finale. Hozier and Joss Stone handled lead vocals on the first verse of the David Bowie cover. Rodgers, LaVette, Ivan Neville, Marcus King, Larkin Poe, Lucius, Luke Spiller and Chic’s Kimberly Davis also helped sing “Let’s Dance.”
A run of guitar solos towards the middle of “Let’s Dance” began with Don Felder tearing it up. Then, Tom Morello, Nile Rodgers, Bernie Williams and Marcus King shredded. Trombone Shorty blew a solo of his own before Felder and Morello had another go to bring the song to a close.
