Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl was among the artists on a stacked lineup of performers at the eighth annual Locks Rocks NYC benefit concert last night at The Beacon Theatre. Grohl led the house band through both Foo Fighters favorite “Everlong” and a powerful rendition of Paul McCartney & Wings’ 1973 hit “Live And Let Die.”

The marathon four-hour show was a fundraiser for God’s Love We Deliver. The non-profit organization home-delivers medically tailored meals to New Yorkers living with severe illnesses. $3.8 million was raised from this year’s concert allowing God’s Love We Deliver to provide 380,000 meals to those in need.

At the heart of Love Rocks NYC is an otherworldly house band led by bassist Will Lee. The ensemble has undergone few changes since the first benefit in 2017 with Lee joined by percussionist Pedrito Martinez, guitarist Eric Krasno, multi-instrumetalist Larry Campbell, drummers Shawn Pelton and Steve Gadd, keyboardists Jeff Babko and Michael Bearden. Featured performers such as Grohl, Tom Morello, Allison Russell, Don Felder, Nile Rodgers, Joss Stone and Larkin Poe would take turns fronting the ensemble throughout the night. Turnovers were kept quick with comedians Conan O’Brien, Martin Short, Bill Murray, Tracy Morgan and Jim Gaffigan entertaining fans during short breaks in the action.

While many of the artists assembled at The Beacon last night were Love Rocks NYC veterans, Dave Grohl performed at the benefit concert for the first time. Grohl picked up his distinctive Epiphone guitar late in the evening and noted how happy he was to play Love Rocks NYC with the talented house band. He also told the capacity crowd he was about to perform a song that usually ends concerts before starting “Everlong” solo. The ensemble kicked into the song from Foo Fighters’ The Colour and the Shape after the first chorus and backed Grohl on the rest of the tune with horns also contributing to “Everlong.”

Dave Grohl followed the performance of his own song by taking on the Paul McCartney-penned “Live And Let Die” for the first time since joining Zac Brown Band on the Wings classic in 2016. Grohl, the house band, the horn section and backing vocalists nailed the faithful rendition of the theme song from the 1973 James Bond film.

Conan O’Brien began the night by covering Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds” with Jimmy Vivino and the house band. Emily King then belted out “Love The One You’re With” by Stephen Stills. Other memorable moments included Trombone Shorty collaborating with Ivan Neville and Joss Stone on Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy,” a stirring “This Land Is Your Land” sung by Tom Morello, The Struts’ Luke Spiller fronting “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Larkin Poe stripping down Elton John’s “Crocodile Rock” and Stone jumping into the crowd during a top-shelf version of “Super Duper Love.”

Hozier was a force in his third Love Rocks NYC appearance joining Russell and Emily King for “Teach Your Children,” participating in the aforementioned “This Land Is Your Land” and delivering a three-song mini set consisting of originals “Take Me To Church” and “Francesca” as well as a duet on Stevie Wonder’s “Living For The City” with Allison Russell.

Fellow musical icon Nile Rodgers took the stage after Hozier with members of Chic and the house band on classics “We Are Family” and “Good Times.” The Black Keys headlined by delivering “Howlin’ For You” and “Lonely Boy” before bringing out Marcus King for “I Heard It Through The Grapevine.” Most of the evening’s performers, including Grohl on drums, joined forces on the evening’s “Let’s Dance” finale.
