Lindsay Lou Details Guest-Filled New Album ‘Bluegrass Women’ Featuring ‘All I Ever Loved Was You’ Single

Lindsay Lou will release a guest-filled new album, Bluegrass Women, on August 14. The record features a collection of songs written by female songwriters, performed by Lou alongside the likes of Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, Laurie Lewis, and Aoife O’Donovan and Sarah Jarosz of I’m With Her, among others.

“Just like having pickers like Molly Tuttle and Sierra Hull out there showing little girls that there is a place for them now in bluegrass, I want to show where there always has been,” Lou said of the album’s origins. “Some of these songs I sang for many years before realizing they were penned by a wife/mother/female artist. As a woman, it’s easy to feel like an outsider, or like you don’t belong, in a genre where there is a noticeable lack of representation of women among the forebears. To know that women’s voices made it into the traditional songs feels like a quiet win, and I want to draw more attention to it.”

Bluegrass Women was co-produced by Lou and Shani Gandhi. The album follows Lou’s 2023 LP, Queen of Time. A four-part mini-documentary on the making of Bluegrass Women is set to be released in the coming weeks.

Lou selected “All I Ever Loved Was You,” written by Dorothy Skaggs, mother of Ricky Skaggs, as the first single from Bluegrass Women. Lou shared the below thoughts about recording the song for the album:

“I’ll never forget hearing Ricky and Keith Whitley sing this duet while playing in Ralph Stanley’s band. The harmonies and tenderness of it blew me away. Like many of these songs, I sang it for years before I knew who wrote it. I recall one time in particular singing it with Billy [Strings] in the kitchen at a party. Neither of us had an instrument in hand and there weren’t any around, so we just sang it. It’s such a strong harmony song it stands on its own powerfully.

“There’s nothing lacking in the instrumentation though on the Bluegrass Women arrangement of this track! The twin fiddles and harmonies by Tatiana Hargreaves and Laurie Lewis (cross generational iconic players and women in Bluegrass), and a strong groove held down by Hasee Ciaccio on bass and Maddie Witler on mandolin, give it a feeling like being in an old time honkey tonk dancing with your darlin’. Add Alison Brown on banjo for a classic, rolling, poppy Bluegrass sound and I’m not sure what more a song like this could want.

“When I reached out to Ricky to comment on his mama as a songwriter, he clarified that his parents had a very loving relationship, but she hit on a real good one anyway when she came up with the lyrics for ‘All I Ever Loved Was You.'”

Lou is scheduled to make her debut at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville on July 31. “All I Ever Love Was You” will be officially released tomorrow, Friday, July 10. Stream the single via its exclusive premiere below:
