The Linda Lindas are back with Gotta Get Out, a new studio album set for release on August 28 via Reprise/Warner Records. Out today is “Closer,” a new single from the LP featuring Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams.

The track started off as a bilingual song Bela Salazar and Lucia de la Garza were working on while there bandmates Eloise Wong and Mila de la Garza were at school. Layers of guitar and Hayley Williams’ full-throated vocals were added to transform “Closer” into a bombastic rocker.

The relationship began last August, when Hayley Williams joined The Linda Lindas in London for “Racist, Sexist Boy.” After The Linda Lindas invited the Paramore frontwoman to record her part of “Closer” remotely, she instead showed up at the studio instead to ensure it was a full collaboration. Williams helped write the bridge and went with the band to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios.

“Closer” is about feeling like you’re losing control of time, and watching yourself grow older from afar,” noted Bela Salazar and Lucia de la Garza. “Lately, we’ve been realizing how important it is to stay present, especially when our lives feel constantly in motion. It feels perfect that Hayley Williams was down to collaborate on this song with us, because we’ve been fans of her throughout so many of her different eras– and she’s seen us grow up over the last ten years! We’ll always be honored that we got to write and get emo with the queen of emo herself.”

Williams’ appearance plays into the collaborative approach crucial to the making of Gotta Get Out. Described as “the sound of The Linda Lindas discovering who they are,” the songs are the result of the four members of the band writing together in the same room for the first time. Songwriting sessions in Palm Springs and Long Beach became a creative breakthrough, yielding material The Linda Lindas see as “more intentional, expansive, and personal than anything they’ve made before.”

Across 12 songs, Gotta Get Out tracks a band in motion, pushing past familiar sounds into new textures and influences while wrestling with a shared urge to grow, change and shed old versions of themselves. The Linda Lindas mix intimate reflections on belonging and self-discovery with more explosive bursts of frustration, hope and community, often within the same track.

The Linda Lindas will head out on the road with Bleachers in September for a series of West Coast dates. October festival appearances in Maryland and Florida follow.
